Forest establishment and silviculture

Forest establishment and silviculture requires expertise and careful planning to ensure maximum timber growth and the very best return on your woodlot.

And it’s not one size fits all. Species and stock type are site-specific and determined by terrain, soil, climatic conditions and rate of growth.

We embrace the most modern technology in planning systems and tools to assist in decision making.

We plant around 4,000 hectares per annum and stock is expertly grown by local nurseries in Rangiora, Edendale, Gisborne, Rotorua, Kaikohe and Tokoroa.

Harvest management

Good harvest planning and management is a critical part of value optimisation.

Rayonier Matariki Forests manages the complete process from strategic and tactical harvest planning, resource consents, woodflow planning, roading engineering, harvesting, cartage and sales and marketing to both domestic and export customers.

Safety and environmental management are a fundamental part of our business.

We are proud of our strong safety record and work hard to maintain it, implementing safety programmes across the business and those of our contractors to ensure safe forest harvesting practices.

Caring for our environment is integrated into all practices and processes, from looking after the land we work on, to selecting partners who share our values and working with cartage and freight companies who are committed to reducing carbon emissions and the impact on our world.

Domestic and export markets

Domestic

Within New Zealand we sell to a diverse range of customers with around half of all timber destined for local use – from industrial use and housing construction to high end uses such as furniture manufacture.

Marketing and sales activity is guided by a common framework enabling a consistent approach to market and customer management providing our domestic processors with the greatest opportunity for continued investment.

We have a good geographic spread across the country and can leverage the benefits of scale with harvesting and cartage contractors, port access and shipping.

We take a tailored approach to each customer whether it is a smaller farm forest or professional forest investor from standing trees to the end customer.

Export

Rayonier Matariki Forests is the largest New Zealand forest owner with a New Zealand based in-house export marketing function.

Our highly experienced team’s logistics service, export planning and forecasting, combined with technically advanced systems and resources gives us a competitive advantage. With more than 30 years’ experience in log export shipping we have highly skilled in-house chartering, shipping and port management expertise.

Our strong reputation in all major markets gives us timely and direct access to market intelligence and activity. 

We use highly skilled and reputable service providers at all stages of the sales and marketing process.

Our export markets continue to expand and the highly experienced export team take pride in fostering long term customer relationships built on integrity, honesty and delivering on promises.

Exporting to more than 40 customers across five markets, Rayonier Matariki Forests is widely recognised as a leading supplier in Korea, South India and Taiwan. Other significant markets include China and Vietnam. We currently manage exports from New Zealand, Australia and USA.
